The gold penny was not popular. In 1257 Henry instructed his goldsmith, William of Gloucester, to produce a coinage of pure gold. Cardinal Guala Bicchierideclared the war against the rebel barons to be a religious crusade and Henry's forces, led by William Marshal, defeated the rebels at the battles of Lincolnand Sandwichin 1217.
