Waud’s service placed him in the midst of one of the most critical campaigns of the war in the East—theBattle of Imphal, which began inMarch 1944 as part of the JapaneseU-Go offensive. It was during this critical period of the campaign thatTrooper Waud was killed in action on 4 May 1944, aged33, in theBurma theatre.
