Antique Gilt Lacquer "Kashmiri Style" Snuff Box – c. 1880

£20

This box features an incredibly dense, hand-painted gilt floral pattern over a deep black lacquer. While it follows the form of a traditional European snuff box, the "all-over" gold leaf decoration is highly characteristic of the Kashmiri or Anglo-Indian export trade that flourished during the British Raj. It represents the 19th-century obsession with "Exotic" eastern designs. Condition & Details Era: Late 19th Century (c. 1870–1900). Material: Lacquered wood or papier-mâché.Dimensions: 2in x 1.25in x 1in Condition: RUSTIC ANTIQUE CONDITION. The gold leaf has "rubbed" on the left side from decades of handling, revealing the dark lacquer beneath. This "shabby chic" patina is highly desired by many collectors as it proves the item's age.
