Adolphe Thiers (1797–1877) was a prominent French statesman and historian. He served as President of the French Republic and was known for his opposition to Napoleon III. The Old King of Bohemia is a mocking reference likely to Ferdinand I of Austria (1793–1875), who was also King of Bohemia.
