Here we have a very interesting small box for sale. I believe it is burr walnut veneer with a Birdseye maple carcass. 15cm wide, 5.5cm tall and 9.5cm deep. The most interesting thing is the inscription on the back. It looks like it belonged to a German solder called Otto Kruger. The inscription also details the Battalion, Regiment and date: 2. Sept. 1916. The word “kriegsgefangener” means prisoner of war and presumably he was held prisoner in Leigh, Greater Manchester? (There was a German prisoner of war camp there during WW1). There is damage to the veneer and the bottom of the box has warped but remains attached to the bottom of the box. It has been repaired badly. It would be interesting to know if Heir Kruger survived WW1?
