Francis Jearrard Bowker was born in Paddockhurst, Sussex in 1868. He had a distinguished military career, being promoted to the rank of Major before he retired from the army. They married in Cairo where Francis was serving as ADC to Major-General Sir C. B. Knowles K.C.B. from October 1895 until August 1897.
