Officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, the order was originally created to protect Christian pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. The dramatic downfall of the Knights Templar in the early 14th century, including arrests ordered by King Philip IV of France in 1307, helped create centuries of legends, myths, and fascination surrounding the order.
