On the Formation of British Lancers, Drouville 1813. 6 col plates Napoleonic War

£750

Printed in London in 1813, this is a rare pamphlet proposing the formation of a Corps of Lancers in the British army at a time when only a few European nations, notably the French, had such regiments. Written towards the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars, the author first makes the case for the superiority of the lance as a weapon over the cavalry sword or sabre. He then goes on to suggest how lancer regiments should be equipped, uniformed and trained. Though described as a ‘new’ edition on the title page, there is no record of an earlier edition, so presumed to be the first and only edition of this work. This is a rare publication. The only copy noted as having been sold at auction was sold in 1925. Illustrated with six full page hand coloured plates.
