Although these vests are associated with British paratroopers, they were issued to most British forces. They were worn to aid in warm and cold climates. The vest was worn underneath the battledress or dennison smock, creating a breathale layer allowing air flow inbetween clothes in warm climates and an extra layer for warmth in cold climates.
