The unit maintained motor launch boats used for anti-submarine patrols, attacking coastal defences, coastal convoy escorts, minelay/sweeping, special operations and air sea rescue. George Edgar Laity joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve as an ordinary seaman service number D/JX178517 and began training at HMS Raleigh (Torpoint) January 1940.
