He joined the Night Figter unit 9/NJG3 in November 1941. He was Staffelkapitan of 11/NJG1 at the end of 1942. He was awarded the Knights Cross during the Battle of Britain on 1st October 1940. He was awarded the Oakleaves on 24th March 1944 which was incidently the last major raid on Berlin.
