Krems joined the Luftwaffe as a pilot on 9 November 1938. On 15 March 1939 he went to Advanced Flying Training and Role Conversion at Gatow, Berlin. On 16 April 1940 he joined the Strategic Reconnaissance School at Grossenhain Reserve Squadron at Weinar-Nohra.
