The Sinking of RMS Lusitania 1915 WW1 British Propaganda Medal

£52.70

The Sinking of RMS Lusitania 1915 WW1 British Propaganda Medal A 1915 replica of a German medal designed by Karl Goetz. The design was replicated and distributed by the British to demonstrate the brutality of the sinking of the passenger ship, RMS Lusitania. They capitalized on an error made by German art medallist Karl Goetz, who featured the wrong date on his original medallion – ‘5 Mai’. The Government were able to point to this as evidence that the attack was in fact pre-meditated murder. The cast iron medal depicts on the obverse a starboard bow view of the ship sinking. The reverse shows Death at the Cunard shipping office selling tickets to a queue of people for the voyage.
