He served through the fierce German blitzkrieg and retreat, successfully evacuating back to the UK in June 1940 during the Dunkirk evacuation. Later in the war, his unit embarked for active service overseas with the British Liberation Army (BLA), disembarking in the recently liberated Channel Islands in early May 1945.
