He worked as a groom (taking care of horses) before he enlisted in January of 1892. Rolfe died after nine years of service at Dum Dum, India, on the 6th May 1901. He was aged 28. In 1901, North-East India experienced a pandemic in the form of a black fever known as "Dum-Dum Fever".
