Vintage Rowntree's Gum Pastilles delivery or display box c1910 #26106

£55

This "Rowntree's" "Gum Pastilles" box is in "as found" condition. It would have been used to transport "Rowntree's Gum Pastilles" to the shop keeper and then used to display the contents on the counter. This box held 'Black Currant Ovals'. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who bought a chocolate company from the Tuke family. The original factory was in the centre of the City of York. Rowntree's was bought by Nestle in 1988, many of the original brands survive but much of the manufacture is now carried out overseas. The box is constructed from pine with paper labels to front, both sides and to the interior of lid. The outside labels have a fair depth of colour, but there is some fading, staining and marks in places, but the lettering and decoration are still clear and legible.
