Attending various Schools of Aviation from January 1918, he was Gazetted Temporary 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Air Force as a Flying Officer (Observer) on 18 June 1918. Joining 10 Squadron in France on 20 June 1918, this squadron had been equipped with Armstrong Whitworth FK8’s (Big Aks) since 1917 but were beginning to be equipped with Bristol F.2b.
