John Harkness was a Scottish-born laborer from Jedburgh who enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on July 16, 1915, at Keswick, South Australia. He was initially appointed to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade before transferring to the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column.
